The Serchio Valley
The Serchio Valley, including the Garfagnana, namely the High Serchio Valley, and the Serchio Valley (commonly Mediavalle).
The Serchio Valley is a district of the province of Lucca from the city of Lucca, in the south, and the Garfagnana to the north, which extends along the basin of the river Serchio.
The Serchio Valley includes, from north to south, the towns of Barga, Coreglia Antelminelli, Bagni di Lucca, famous and prestigious spa, Borgo a Mozzano Fabbriche di Vallico, Villa Basilica, notable district of paper production, Pescaglia and, with the villages, agro-industrial and San Martino Monsagrati.
Formerly inhabited by Ligurian Apuani met different fates with respect to the nearby Garfagnana historically subject to Estensi of Modena ("Estense Valley").
Mediavalle the other hand, in the twelfth or thirteenth century belonged to the Republic of Lucca ("Lucca Valley") with the exception of the main town of Barga, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany ("Tuscan Valley").

Serchio Valley, after a Ponte a Moriano, is reached along the Lodovica way(right of the river Serchio) or the Brennero way (left).
Before the quarrying of stone there, high in the green, the Convent of the Angel and soon the landscape of Brancoleria embellished Romanesque churches.
For those who follow the Lodovica we recommend a visit to the Pieve di Diecimo (sec. XII).
Going to Pescaglia an initial deviation leads to Vetriano and Colognora: imposing houses, Museo del Castagno(Museum Chestnut - museodelcastagno.it) and a second visit in Celle, where is the abode of the ancestors of the sixteenth century Giacomo Puccini, now converted into a museum.
Borgo a Mozzano, with its ancient palaces, the church of S. Iacopo with Della Robbia statue and the characteristic Ponte del Diavolo, is the first of four centers of considerable historical and artistic tradition of the area.
Going up the river Lima, over the Ponte delle Catene meets the roman landscape Bagni di Lucca, one of the oldest and nursing stations in Italy.
Famous in Europe for the steam jet and the variety of hot water, was long used by scientists rulers and politicians.
Among its monuments, in the Villa, there are the Romanesque church of S. Peter Corsena, Villa del Principe, Villa Ada (mineral water treatments, swimming pools with natural hot water), the palaces of XVI - XVII century the nobility of Lucca, which surround the fifteenth spa of Domenica Bertini, the Palazzo del Comune (sec. XVI) and the circle of Forestieri; at Ponte a Serraglio are the casino, the Hospital Deminoff, Villa Fiori, Villa Pellegrini.
The nearby mountains, around Bagni di Lucca some countries rich in charm, and works of art (Granaiola, Benabbio, Casabasciana, Crasciana, Lucchio, Limano, Vico Pancellorum, S. Cassiano di Pieve di Controne Controne, Montefegatesi, Monti di Villa ).
Returning to the left of the Serchio shortly we arrive in the town of Coreglia Antelminelli renowned for the importance its fortified villages (Tereglio, Ghivizzano and Coreglia).
Bagni di Lucca preserves, at noon, the sixteenth century bastions dominate the center of the church of S. Michele (sec. XII) and a tower of the Thousand.
In the most visible are the high medieval walls and fortress, and outside the pre-Romanesque church of S. Martino. Among the many works include the statues in marble (sec. XIV) of the church depicting the Archangel St. Michael and the Annunciation.
Among the buildings are worthy of mention: the Forte (center of literary and artistic works and place of collection and display of prehistoric artefacts and archaeological sites in the area); Palazzo Vanni headquarters of the Museum of the "Figurine of Chalk" and dell'Emigrazione), which collects more than 1,000 small statues, ancient and modern cribs, and various documents on the activities of Figurinisti (dress designer) throughout the world.
The nearby territory of Barga is a source of beautiful landscapes and encounters with art, tradition and poetry.
The parish church of Loppia (sec. XIII) and the Church of Tiglio (marble Annunciation painting by sec. XIV), Castle Sommocolonia, the house museum of Giovanni Pascoli in Castelvecchio, are milestones in a journey of significant interest.
But the charm of the Media Valle del Serchio you can grasp in its entirety from the churchyard of the Cathedral of Barga.
Above all it seems at hand: the Serchio, the Apuan Alps, the Apennines, the new town along the Piangrande roofs of palaces and churches that stand on street Pretorio and Via di Mezzo.
Besides door Macchiaia there are traces of a kiln, active in the fifteenth and sixteenth century.
Hence came the Della Robbia blades, which were widely distributed from Lucca to Castelnuovo and that, in Barga, in the churches of S. Francis, S. Elizabeth and Cathedral are the subject of constant admiration.

In the middle Ages was defined Garfagnana, the land that until Lucca gravitated to the Serchio.
After the sixteenth century, the name Garfagnana, taken to indicate that part of the valley was dominated by the Dukes of Este.
Excluding Gallicano, Lucca castle with beautiful palaces and churches of great value (S. Iacopo, S. Giovanni, S. Lucia, S. Maria, S. Maria di Pianizza, S. Andrea), fall in the history of the Este family of Garfagnana countries that stand at the foot of Pania: Transillico, Vergemoli, Fornovolasco, area famous for the "Grotta del vento", Calomini, overlooking the precipice miraculously found space where the Hermitage of St. Mary and Martyres, Fabbriche di Vallico, Molazzana, Cascio, Sassi.
Castelnuovo marks the meeting point of roads to bring in communication with the Garfagnana Lucca, Emilia, Lunigiana and Versilia.

The countries of Pieve Fosciana, also known for its spa waters (Small thermal lake of Pr� di Lama), Sillico, Castiglione and Sassorosso, are a constant reminder to the above mentioned, Casone of Profecchia and Passo delle Radici locations are weather and winter ski resorts equipped with lifts.
